Race Reconnaissance
Here is the transition area at Ironman Arizona. Note the grass which and the
proximity of the boat dock to the swim exit. There is plenty to learn from these
photos. Google Earth features views at various times of day so you can even
determine if and when  the sun will be in your eyes on race day.

The key to a successful Iron-distance race is preparation. The more familiar you are with the race course, the better prepared you will be. You can develop your
that will get you as close to being there as possible.

Having the information is only the first step. How will you use it to your best advantage?  Here are some tips:
  • Become very familiar with the course map.
  • Seek a variety of views. Satellite views, street views, standard maps, and even videos are out there for you to explore. Go beyond the race-
  • Read as many race reports as you can that relate to your race. This is time consuming but the tidbits to be found are invaluable because they are not
    sugar-coated sales pitches.
  • Label course map with Race Plan elements. The Ironplanner describes slicing each discipline up into manageable pieces. Mark your map with
reminders of your fueling, pacing and mental strategies for each slice of the race.
  • Keep a notebook with everything related to your race and add to it often.
